The Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (OFVGA) established over 150 years ago, represents the best interests of the growers in the edible fruit and vegetable industry at the provincial and federal levels.  With the establishment of the Greenbelt in 2005, the OFVGA acknowledged the need for a greater understanding of the implications this designation could have for the fruit and vegetable industry.  To achieve this, Planscape Inc. and Regional Analytics were commissioned to conduct a study to examine the implications for and potential role of the Greenbelt on the future of the fruit and vegetable industry in Ontario.  Specifically, the study considers the structure and role of the fruit and vegetable industry in the Greenbelt within the context of historic, present and future role of the entire fruit and vegetable sector in Ontario.

The study quantifies the impact of the fruit and vegetable industry, both generally and in the Greenbelt, on the provincial economy.  It provides insight into the issues impacting the industry, the steps that can be taken to support it and the critical linkages impacting the industry both in and outside of the Greenbelt.
