In 2009, the Greater Toronto Area Agricultural Action Committee (GTA AAC) and the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance (GTMA) commissioned this study to address the issues currently impacting agriculture and related sectors in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and to identify the circumstances required for local agriculture and related economic activities to prosper.

The study was conducted in two phases.  The first phase addressed opportunities for agriculture and food processing and related activities.

The objectives of the report are to:
1.  Describe the current status of the business of farming in the GTA;
2.  Describe and analyse significant changes in farming in the GTA during the past decade;
3.  Assess the economic, social and environmental contribution of farming in the GTA;
4.  Review the implications of the evolving demographic profile of the GTA for agriculture;
5.  Assess the potential to address the widening gap in agri-food trade; and
6.  Provide a strategic audit of the 2005 GTA Action Plan with recommendations regarding future goals.
