Economic Impacts of Farmers' Markets in Ontario
Project Date/Duration: 2011

View a sample of the official plan  Economic Impact Study  (2.98MB)

Farmers markets are a traditional, much enjoyed facet of small town and rural life.  Over time they have retained a role in large urban centres.  Recently, with growing interest in local food and an appreciation for knowing who produces the food we eat, the number of farmers' markets both in urban centres and in small town and rural Ontario has grown.

There is an implicit understanding that farmers markets contribute to quality of life by providing a relaxed enjoyable retail experience and by promoting interaction between rural and urban citizens.  What is less clearly understood are the economic benefits these markets have for participants and for the economy in general.
